Bio   |   Recent Projects

With over 25 years experience, Fred has provided consulting services for more than 2,500 projects across 10 states. He has extensive experience across New York and the surrounding states in the areas of Geotechnical, Geohydrologic and Construction Materials Engineering. The scope of services for these projects typically includes planning and managing exploratory site investigations, laboratory testing programs, preparing geotechnical evaluation reports and managing construction inspection and testing services.

Fred's experience includes evaluating and preparing geotechnical reports for new construction and forensic investigations for failures at: residential and commercial developments, municipal facilities, industrial facilities, communication and broadcast antennas, water towers and tanks, bridges, dock fronts, groundwater and impoundment supply studies, landfill sitings and closures and septic systems. These project types have typically included the design of groundwater control measures, the design of site earthworks, shallow and deep foundations, braced and tied back excavation support systems in soil and rock, tank farms, tunnels and pipelines, flexible and rigid pavement designs, road and railroad embankments, earthen and concrete dams, cofferdams, rigid and flexible retaining walls, reinforced earth slopes, embankment and slope failures, vibratory and impacting machine foundations and construction period and permanent dewatering.

The solutions employed at the sites for support of buildings have included ordinary spread foundations, deep foundations consisting of driven pipe, H and timber piles, auger cast and micro piles, dry and slurry drilled concrete filled shafts, soil and rock anchors, chance anchors and underpinning pits, piles and shafts. Fred has designed foundation systems employing reinforced earth mats, concrete mats and building and site retaining walls supporting lightweight and Geofoam fills. Where poor soil conditions have been encountered, improvement methods such as jet grouting, silicate and cement grouting, Deep Dynamic Compaction and Vibro Replacement have been employed. Conventional drive and jack and micro-tunnel methods employing earth balance techniques have been designed for road and river crossings. Geotechnical studies for hydroelectric generating facilities have included design of intake canals in soil and rock, including deep rock excavations approaching 150' in depth and rock tunnels 30' in diameter. These projects required the design of low and high pressure grouting of soil and rock using cement and silicate materials to reduce permeability of the mediums.

Load test experience includes conventional axial and horizontal top load, deep shaft Osterberg Test methods and dynamic tests of driven piles and drilled shafts. Plate load tests for bearing and subgrade Modulous determinations have been employed at airport runway projects.

Mr. Dente has performed numerous site investigations for the project types listed to delineate historical and expected groundwater fluctuations, mounding effects and regional and localized flow direction as a result of site developments. Fred has designed permanent and temporary systems for localized groundwater recharge and control and depression of the water table that have included the use of infiltration basins, deep wells, trickle wells, well points, sump and pump techniques, underdrains, french drains and where impractical to dewater, floating pressure mat/slabs systems for below grade construction.
